Mouly chose all of the artists and writers for their strong sense of visual storytelling, rather than for their reputation in the field of children’s books, and she worked closely with each to ensure age-appropriate vocabulary. The titles were then vetted in elementary classrooms in Brooklyn and the Bronx. TOON Books has been adopted as part of Maryland’s Comics in the Classroom initiative, and children’s librarians nationwide are enthusiastic. Mouly describes comics as an ideal medium for “multimodal” learning (following both visual cues and dialogue) as well as an inspiration to creativity: Children who love to read comics very often go on to create their own. Mouly’s firsthand experience suggests what she describes as the “overlap between comics readers and highly literate people.” TOON may coax more New York kids into that category.
