My seven-year-old got accustomed to taking cabs this winter. Now she complains when we walk more than four blocks. Have we ruined her?
You still have time to set her back on the right path. Get her into shape by throwing a couple of motivating strolls into your routine, such as a hike over to one of her favorite spots, perhaps the American Girl store or Crumbs bakery. What to do when the whining begins? Let her in on a little secret about life in NYC: A walk through the city can be just as fun as a pricey play space. Make a game out of it—see if she can count the number of tiny dogs or Starbucks outposts you pass along the way. If she’s still complaining, let her know that cab rides are not free, and that if she wants to take one so badly she can pay for it with her tooth fairy money.
