DanceAfrica
In BAM’s longest-running performance series, domestic troupes join their African counterparts to celebrate black heritage worldwide. Of the four groups on this year’s bill, two are from New York: Harlem’s LaRocque Bey School of Dance Theatre and the BAM/Restoration DanceAfrica ensemble. “I make sure the companies selected have made a point of studying the traditions,” says Chuck Davis, DanceAfrica’s “founding elder” and artistic director. The series will also feature the first U.S. appearance of Gambia’s Ceesay Kujabi and the Bachinab—a troupe with whom Davis has worked in Africa in the past. The performance will highlight the akonting, a Gambian instrument that is the forerunner of the banjo. BAM Howard Gilman Opera House. Fri 23 at 7:30pm; Sat 24 at 2, 7:30pm; Sun 25, Mon 26 at 3pm.
