Fourth of July weekend activities in NYC

Celebrate the Red, White and Blue with patriotic parties around the city.

    By Christy Purington

Roosevelt Island July 4th Fireworks Festival
Fri 4; gates open at 5pm. South Point Park, Roosevelt Island (888-695-0888, roosevelt-island.ny.us). Subway: F to Roosevelt Island. $20. Musical performances from artists like salsa star Victor Quezada and alterna-rockers Citizens of Contrary Knowledge keep your babe’s hips in motion. When the little ones get tuckered out from dancing, keep them entertained with carnival rides, clowns, stilt walkers and face painting until the fireworks begin. Advance tickets required. All ages.

    FREE International African Arts Festival
Fri 4, Sat 5 10am–7pm. Commodore John Barry Park, Navy St between Flushing and Park Aves, Fort Greene, Brooklyn (718-638-6700, iaafestival.org). Subway: N, Q, R to DeKalb Ave. This 37th annual showcase of local, national and international performers features steel and jazz bands, gospel choirs, reggae artists and much more. On Friday afternoon look for the Brooklyn Jumbies, a troupe that boogies while atop stilts. Ages 18 months to 12 years.

    FREE Clifford’s Annual Beach Party
Sat 5 at 3pm. Scholastic Store, 557 Broadway between Prince and Spring Sts (212-343-6166, scholasticstore.com). Subway: D, F to Broadway–Lafayette St; N, R to Prince St. Goof around today with the Big Red Dog (he’s an appropriate color, considering the holiday) and enjoy some summertime shenanigans.
