Travel: J to Broad St; 1 to South Ferry; 4, 5 to Bowling Green; then take the free Governors Island ferry from Battery Maritime Building, South St between Broad and Whitehall Sts, Slip 7. Performing for the first time on the city’s mini isle, the Philharmonic orchestra honors Independence Day with a rousing program of patriotic works such as “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Fireworks cap off the evening. All ages.

Sat 5 5–11pm. Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Pkwy at Washington Ave, Prospect Heights, Brooklyn (718-638-5000, brooklynmuseum.org). Subway: 2, 3 to Eastern Pkwy–Brooklyn Museum. Hakuna matata! Celebrate African culture with a live jazz concert, a Senegalese dance show, a collage-making activity and an outdoor dance party replete with traditionally clad African performers. Ages 3 and up.

Subway: C, 1 to 103rd St. With live musical accompaniment, Ramzi El-Edlibi and performers from Lotus Music & Dance Studios teach kids moves from traditional celebratory Middle Eastern dances.
