Old-world chanson and postwar classical music remain the lifeblood of Barbez, but the band can still rock out hard. Variety is key: The ethereal blend of electronics, violin, marimba and more is utterly bewitching. The group's weekly Barbès residency this month previews a forthcoming LP inspired by the music of the Jewish community in Rome. Theremin expert Pamelia Kurstin, whose gift on her wonky instrument is profound and generous, opens on Oct 25 at 8pm (performing duets with pianist Pete Drungle), before sitting in with Barbez at 10pm.
