Versatile saxophonist Chris Potter has been a favored sideman and soloist for a who's who of modern jazzers and the odd rocker or two, all the while maintaining a steady stream of worthy solo albums. The Sirens, new from ECM, feels like a real breakthrough, both for the originality of its conception—an enhanced quartet with Craig Taborn and David Virelles sharing keyboard duties—and the seamless interplay provided by the band, completed by bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Eric Harland. Potter's got Grenadier on hand for this entire run and Harland for most of it; Ethan Iverson mans the piano bench, and Adam Cruz handles drumming on Feb 5 and Feb 10.
