Sierra Leone’s Janka Nabay, a purveyor of minimal beats and hypnotic talk-singing—a surprisingly joyous, party-friendly blend—gigs with Yonatan Gat. Formerly the guitarist of incendiary Israeli garage-rock trio Monotonix—whose concerts infamously featured trash-can infernos, singing while crowd-surfing, and mosh-inciting antics—Gat has reinvented himself as a world-music riff maven. He's shed his former band’s arena-ready heft and shtick in favor of interstellar psychedelia overdrive, free-jazz–inspired improv and ’60s-era Brazilian pop on a new LP, Director.
