Mentored by the young Freddie Hubbard and hired early on by leaders such as Wes Montgomery and Kenny Dorham, Indianapolis drummer Killer Ray Appleton spent most of the ’70s and ’80s in Europe, and much of the following stretch out of the limelight. When we caught him a few weeks back at a memorial for a hometown buddy, trumpeter Virgil Jones, his swing was as supple as ever; here he's celebrating a new CD, Naptown Legacy, with a starry combo gathered by trumpeter Brian Lynch.
