Jeremiah Cymerman moves in avant-jazz, new-music and art-metal circles, but his own work doesn't fit comfortably in any of those categories; every new release from the local clarinetist-composer is a sui generis dispatch from the front lines of the NYC avant-garde. Here, Cymerman celebrates Pale Horse, which is as different from last year's harrowing Sky Burial as that record was from its predecessor. As on the album, you'll hear here from the trio of Cymerman, cellist Christopher Hoffman and percussionist Brian Chase, performing ominous, ritualistic, finely detailed drone works that handsomely reward the acute attention they demand. Experimental drummer extraordinaire Ryan Sawyer opens with a solo set.
