Downtown Music Festival. Montreal duo Purity Ring can lay claim to one of last year's strongest debuts with Shrines, an original brand of future-pop that weds sugar-sweet melodies and butchered samples with evocative, deeply creepy lyrics. Live, Megan James and Corin Roddick are a revelation: Roddick’s setup features homemade lanterns, which he hits with drumsticks to trigger sounds, while James is the shrouded, drum-bashing mistress of ceremonies.
