New Jersey outfit Screaming Females' sound, an edgy, squalling combination of Sleater-Kinney’s heavy-hitting grrrl vocals and Dinosaur Jr.’s melodically distorted alt rock, is best caught live, with the highly energetic, tiny Marissa Paternoster hunched over her guitar and sporting a churchy black-and-white collared dress as she rawwwks out. Expect to hear from the band's latest, Ugly, and get sneak peeks of a newie due next year. Also on board here is Waxahatchee—the spare, vulnerable indie-pop project of singer-songsmith Katie Crutchfield—heard lately on the much-fussed-over Cerulean Salt. Additional support comes from Heaven's Gate (Sept 14) and Aye Nako (Sept 16).
