The 8th Sephardic Music Festival

Le Poisson Rouge, Greenwich Village Wednesday December 12 2012 21:45
The scene that came to be known as Radical Jewish Culture when it coalesced at the Knitting Factory during the late ’80s and early ’90s is still going strong, and tonight's celebratory event covers both roots and offshoots. At the top of the bill is Zion 80, guitarist Jon Madof's joyous Afrobeat treatment of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach's music. Hasidic New Wave, a Knitting Factory mainstay, celebrates a new Tzadik anthology in the company of Senegalese drum troupe Yakar Rhythms; singing violinist Mika Karney completes the bill.
