Charles Bradley’s pedigree—weathered, unknown NYC soul survivor with Southern roots gets belated break after chance encounter with the Daptone Records crew—is similar to that of Sharon Jones, the label’s banner star, and of Lee Fields, though the songs on his Daptone debut tended toward a darker hue. On Sept 20, the sixtysomething supports his excellent recent sophomore effort, Victim of Love, as part of a free gig that also features two of the imprint's other fan-favorite acts: Blaxploitation-style funksters the Budos Band, and raspy-voiced Brooklyn gospel purveyor Naomi Shelton.
