The Dutchess & the Duke

Time Out Ratings

<strong>Rating: </strong>4/5

Dutchess Kimberly Morrison and Duke Jesse Lortz’s debut album is a well-spun period piece alluding to the mid-’60s (when the duo’s heroes stalked the earth) and the mid-’90s (when indie bands worshipped at a similar altar). Their reference points are specific and considered, as if the musicians held Ph.D.’s in record collecting: Brian Jones–era Stones, glimmers of the Velvet Underground, the Mamas and the Papas, Bob Dylan’s work of 1965. The Seattleites recorded She’s the Dutchess, He’s the Duke on eight-track, a method considered too time-consuming by the majority of their contemporaries. Their hours were well spent: The album has an earthy sound befitting its songs, spinning like dusty near-hits from an indistinct past.
