Book bracket champion

When we ask, "What book is most essential to life in New York?"—as we did in our recently completed book bracket challenge—it begs the question of what characterizes anything as essentially "New York." Certainly, we would say that it should adhere to NY tastes, whatever those are.
Additionally, the item in question should exhibit a New York personality, and this is a striving, get-what-you-earn kind of town. So while some people might object to the unashamed ballot rigging that allowed Freakonomics to prevail, we see the result as quite apropos. (It worked for Boss Tweed, didn't it?) If these titles were marathoners, or golfers, Freakonomics would not have been the competitor with the most talent. It just wanted it more.
