Carabossy: burning up the stage
Mon Jun 11 2007
There were some crazy cast changes at Saturday night's final performance of American Ballet Theatre's production of The Sleeping Beauty. Diana Vishneva was "sick," which meant that David Hallberg got the night off, and Angel Corella and Paloma Herrera performed instead (not too shabby). But before the second act began, there was an announcement: "Because of an injury sustained in the first act, Gelsey Kirkland will not be playing Carabosse." Kristi Boone, who danced the Fairy of Fervor, took over, with Kajiya replacing Boone. According to Kelly Ryan, ABT's spokesperson, Kirkland suffered a burn to the hand: "She was treated by doctors from the Met and ABT. As a precaution, she was brought to the emergency room at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital where was treated and released. Ms. Kirkland has returned to work today."
Her very own pyrotechnics did her in.
