Catch this film tonight: Ninotchka
Mon Jul 20 2009
It's likely that Greta Garbo's Russian comrade would demand that you "suppress" the urge to see the classic romantic comedy that bears her name. But it'd be a crime to miss Ninotchka, the latest entry in the series "Hollywood's Greatest Year: The Best Picture Nominees of 1939," screening tonight at 7:30pm at the Academy Theater (111 E 59th St). While on a top-secret mission from Moscow, the stern and stalwart Nina Yakushova "Ninotchka" Ivanoff finds her amorous feelings awakened by Melvyn Douglas's Parisian count. She quickly succumbs to love's clarion call, much to the distress of herself and her superiors. That inimitable comic "touch" you're sure to experience comes courtesy of director Ernst Lubitsch, who counted this among his favorite efforts. Marketed as the film in which "Garbo laughs," it's sure to bring a smile to even the stoniest of faces.
