Rihanna at IZOD Center

If there is one piece of advice we can impart to future Rihanna concert attendees, it is this: dance. Rihanna's entire set—from the opening "Only Girl in the World" to the rip-roaring "What's My Name/Rude Boy" medley—played with many different rhythms and moods, yet all were brought to life by the star's free-flowing sexual energy. Last night's show at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, proved not only Rihanna's seemingly endless cache of recognizable hits, but also that they all translate well to their live-band format onstage. Eight hip-thrusting backup dancers, outfitted at various times in leather corsets, neon jumpsuits and low-slung cargo pants, helped bring the star to life. Not that she needed it.

With those signature red locks bouncing around her, Rihanna transitioned imperceptibly between the personas from her songs: One minute, she was jumping on top of cars as a sexy rocker chick, the next, she was chained up, bathed in red light, writhing on all fours, and singing the words to "S&M." Indeed, it was during a midconcert ballad sequence of "Unfaithful," "Hate That I Love You," and "California King Bed" that Rihanna gave the biggest surprise of the night (well, in addition to the whole Jay-Z surprise appearance during the two-song encore!): girl can sing. What a treat when our favorite number, "Rude Boy," started up, and, instead of the studio track's usual glitchy computer precision, it was Rihanna's raucous call-and-response style of singing that got us up out of our seats.
