Next of Kindle

Amazon's new digital reader, the Kindle 2, will be available on February 24. While we don't want to sound like a press release, it looks attractive on paper (har har), with more memory (it can hold more than 1,500 titles), longer battery life (up to two weeks on a single charge) and a pencil-thin design. Sign us up. Still, we remain hesitant about Amazon's lack of Kindle-ready titles: Not a single book by Roberto Bolano is available. This is probably simply a case of playing catch-up, with less-popular books being digitized later than best-sellers. But it does make us wonder how the digital readers, which for a while at least are handled by nonpublishers such as Amazon and Sony, will regard midlist (and so-called literary) authors. And poets.
