Photos: Giglio Sunday
Mon Jul 11 2011
Williamsburg church Our Lady of Mt. Carmel hosted its annual Giglio Sunday festival this past weekend. Unlike typical street fairs, this one had an added bizarre element: Crowds of men hoist a gigantic structure made of lilies (dedicated to Saint Paulinus, who—according to legend—offered himself into slavery in North Africa in order to set free a young man from his village) and carry it through Williamsburg. Meanwhile, a boat, which is lofted in similar fashion, transports a band on its platform—and yes, the musicians perform live as they're carried. Take a look at our photos to get some idea of what this fest is like.
