In just five years, New York Comic Con has become the second-largest comics convention in the country, and this weekend's event gave locals a great excuse to avoid the Californian pilgrimage every summer. In conjunction with the New York Anime Festival, NYCC took over the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center for three days, providing panels, previews, freebies, and even a dating game for cosplayers (those dressed up like the pop-culture characters they love). Several big names—like M. Night Shyamalan (speaking introspectively about the relative failure of his film Unbreakable, ten years after its release), Bruce Timm (unveiling the upcoming DC cartoon series Green Lantern), Seth Green and Matt Senreich (of Robot Chicken), and, of course, the ever-present Stan Lee—hit the main stages, while other panel rooms played host to cult favorites like Corey Feldman (talking about the Lost Boys sequel). East Coasters got to see some material that was not yet ready for San Diego Comic-Con attendees this past July; the rabid fans of AMC's upcoming zombie series The Walking Dead (premieres October 31) nearly tore one another limb from limb in an effort to see approximately nine minutes of footage from the second episode, and Anglophiles were treated to a screening of the complete first episode of the upcoming BBC miniseries Sherlock (premieres October 24 on PBS's Masterpiece Mystery!).—Heather Young
