Pina Bausch: RIP
Tue Jun 30 2009
Pina Bausch died this morning in Wuppertal, Germany, at the age of 68—reportedly, just a few days after having been diagnosed with cancer. The sudden loss of Bausch, whose choreographic voice transformed modern dance and whose company, Wuppertal Dance Theatre, was frequently programmed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, is immeasurable. Her work, in recent years, had little of the experimentalist bite that she was once known for, but what emerged was something sensorial and lasting. In focusing her dance-theater productions on places like Turkey, Portugal and India, as seen in December at BAM, she found a way to distill culture. Above all, Bausch understood the complexity of beauty; she knew it wasn't the same thing as pretty.
