Punk rock laureate

Patti Smith might be accustomed to raucous audiences, but she performs with equal ease before dauntingly serious art crowds (e.g., the kids that don't move at rock shows). Last night at Robert Miller Gallery in Chelsea, Smith presented herself primarily as an artist and a poet (although she did sing a few songs in between spoken word), reading from her new epic poem, "A Pythagorean Traveler," the inspiration for her current exhibition of photographs and sculpture.
Robert Miller Gallery, 524 W 26th St between Tenth and Eleventh Aves (212-366-4774). Smith's show "A Pythagorean Traveler" runs through Sat 13.
