Relax here: Free introduction to meditation class at Jaya Yoga
Mon Apr 5 2010
Carla Stangenberg, director of Jaya Yoga (1626 Eighth Ave at Windsor Pl, Park Slope, Brooklyn; 718-788-8788, jayayogacenter.com) for the past five years, doesn't exactly subscribe to the traditional teacher-student model. Rather than playing the part of a guru with all the answers, her outlook is humble and sincere: "Who am I to teach intuition? But I'm teaching what I need to learn. I need to learn how to listen to myself.... Buddha said, 'Don't take my word for it. Find it on your own.' I'm not knocking gurus, but I feel that," she explained in this interview with the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society.
This self-affirming ethos makes her the perfect leader for a beginners' workshop on meditation, a practice that places great emphasis on discipline and self-motivation. This afternoon's introduction to meditation class (4:45--5:45pm, free) will aim to help people develop their own practice, while also teaching yoga poses that are useful during meditation. No R.S.V.P. required; enlightenment not guaranteed.
