Relax here: Soup and Bread fund-raiser at the Bell House

soupnbreadNewsflash: It's winter. Aside from a quick jaunt to the deli for a box of Oreos, you haven't actually ventured out from the warm bubble that is your apartment since...oh, sometime last year. And unless a potential outing promises hot chocolate, fireplaces or blankets, you have no interest. But what if the light at the end of your frosty trip was a big bowl of hot soup?

That's exactly what The Bell House (149 7th St between Second and Third Aves, Gowanus, Brooklyn; 718-643-6510,; 6-9pm, free) is offering at tonight's soup tasting-extravaganza, Soup and Bread. The free event is actually a Chi-town import started by one-track-minded blog Soup and Bread as a weekly fund-raiser for local food pantries and hunger relief organizations. Tonight, the concept is simple: show up, eat soup, throw some money in a donation hat (proceeds benefit the New York Coalition Against Hunger). There won't be any gold medals given out (it's not a cook-off), just some good food and good company. A few of the ladle-slingers will include Grub Street Chicago editor Helen Rosner, Dave Klopfenstein of Dave's Kitchen and Bell House owner Jack McFadden. The family-friendly festivities should get going at around 6pm. And you should be warmed up in no time.
