RIP: Sophie Roan
Wed Mar 11 2009
We've all been so caught up in celebrating the insane discounts at store-closing sales that we shamefully haven't taken the time to think about the poor store owners. After five years of business in the East Village, Sophie Roan (117 E 7th St between First Ave and Ave A, 212-529-0085) is shutting its doors. "Just last year I re-signed the lease for another five years," laments owner Liz Grenier. "Then the market crashed, people stopped shopping, and it got hard to pay the rent." Grenier said she knew it'd be tough but certainly not this tough. She's tried to negotiate the rent with her landlord since September, but after no avail, she had to let go.

But wait, there's actually some good news: "This is what I do. I just have to find somewhere else to do it. I'm looking to transition to an online store sometime very soon." Stick with TONY for the updates.
