The missing toy soldier

On Sunday afternoon, Robert La Fosse, playing Herr Drosselmeier in New York City Ballet's production of The Nutcracker, found himself in a bind. He opened the boxes containing the Harlequin and Columbine dolls for their dances—so far, so good—but when he did the same for the Soldier, it was empty. "The music started, and I turned around and I did a solo," La Fosse says. "Drosselmeier did a fierce solo! I sort of started off doing some of the steps that the soldier does and then I went, What the hell am I doing? I did pique turns on my heels. It was out of control. I got a few bravos."
