Today's Zen event: "Music and Meditation"
Mon Sep 14 2009
Whether you're still reeling from last night's True Blood finale, or you got too much sun yesterday (we know we did), take some time for body and mind tonight with "Music and Meditation" at Tibet House (22 W 15th St between Fifth and Sixth Aves; 212-807-0563, tibethouse.org). Starting at 7pm, Open Music Ensemble (myspace.com/openmusicensemble) will fill the room with its unique sound: Gong, horn, glockenspiel and tabla are just a few of the instruments this cooperative is likely to show up with, and even then you still never really know what you're going to get. Often performed in parks and outdoor yoga classes, OME's improvisations are storylike and dynamic. You show up, and they provide the backdrop to your meditation, whether that means sitting cross-legged with your eyes closed, or finishing a crossword while doing a headstand. The class is open to all levels of meditators, and they ask for only a $10 donation. You can give what you like, but for an evening of serenaded playtime, you'll probably want to show some gratitude.
