Watching the market

The Food Emporium must be feeling the heat from gourmet grocers like Whole Foods. Last night, the supermarket chain had a swanky soiree for its reopened "Bridgemarket"—the store located under the Queensboro Bridge—with special guest Paul Simon, who was there to announce the partnership of his foundation, the Children's Health Fund, with A&P (the company that owns the Food Emporium). According to a press release, "The Bridgemarket location is the first of 18 Food Emporium stores that will be converted to the Fine Foods concept—16 in New York City and two in Connecticut (New Canaan and Greenwich). The rollout will occur over the next three years."
Chowhounds are apprehensive about the changes. The Bridgemarket location is now equipped with a brand-new gourmet juice and sandwich bar, a tea shop, a mezzanine dining area and a coffee bar, all visible in this cool map. They are also stocking luxury items such as American Wagyu and foie gras.
