We were there: The sixth annual ECNY Awards
Tue Mar 9 2010
Comix was packed for the sixth annual ECNY Awards, which celebrate the best in New York comedy. Not only was the ceremony sold out, but also the show itself featured a horde of alt-scene comics like Kumail Nanjiani and Reggie Watts, well-produced bits (including a great intro with all the comics psyching themselves up for the win), several rousing performances from the Best Musical Comedy Act nominees and a drinking challenge posed by presenter Andrew W.K. It's a great once-a-year event that puts a lot of like-minded people in the same place. "Comedy is community," says Tom Shillue, who won Best One-Person Show for Supernormal.
Of course, gathering comics in a room to hand out awards is also a dubious proposition. Some people are too busy to come claim their awards, while others don't necessarily fit their categories (Emerging Comic Award winner Myq Kaplan has arguably already emerged). Comedians spit barbs at both winners and losers; one of the best came from Best Female Stand-up winner Morgan Murphy: "This room is eight comedians I know and 150 reasons I quit college theater." Certainly the producers must have felt the job thankless at moments.
But in the end, the nominees are comics: They work at night, struggle to pay the bills and insult the things about which they're most passionate. Deep down, they're probably just as happy about the ECNYs as we are.
