Laurie Uprichard, after 15 years as executive director, is leaving Danspace Project to head the International Dance Festival of Ireland, which is based in London. The search for a new director is on, but Guy Yarden will continue to work on plans to establish a new dance center in Brooklyn, as part of the BAM Cultural District development (and Uprichard will remain in an advisory capacity). The search is on... And Carmen de Lavallade, the distinguished dancer, choreographer and actor, will receive the 56th annual Capezio Dance Award. De Lavallade, who began performing in 1950 with the Lester Horton Dance Theater (she was also a huge influence on Alvin Ailey, whom she met in junior high), follows in the footsteps of Martha Graham, Suzanne Farrell, Donald Saddler and Ailey himself. The award, along with $10,000, will be presented to the elegant De Lavallade—pictured with Josephine Baker—on September 17 at the Pierre.
