WE'VE BEEN TO FLORIDA, BUT JUST TO BOCA RATON, WHICH EVERYONE CALLS BOCA, SO THAT DOESN'T REALLY COUNT, YOU KNOW?

What's scathing and lives in Florida? No, not my grandma, if by scathing you mean under four-foot-11 and really awesome at pinochle, but Carl Hiaasen, who indeed spells his name that way, so don't you for one minute think I smuggled an extra a in there, because I didn't. And while I have every intention of getting to your 1 Thing, because you are impatient—which is a trait that's, honestly, sort of abrasive, though it's probably how you got where you are because hey, let's face it, no one got to the top by being nice, and NYC takes no prisoners, and time is money, and the information highway is bottlenecking and aaaaaagh!—I must first offer the following for your consideration: Gyllenhaal. Sarsgaard. Hiaasen. Aalison.

Now, on to your plans for this eve. You will be heading down to Barnes & Noble, this tiny little mom-and-pop bookstore on 17th Street between Broadway and Park Avenue South, to hear Carl Hiaasen reading from and discussing his new novel, Nature Girl, which features a madcap cast of characters. Madcap! Don't you just love things that are madcap? In my experience they're right up there with things that are screwball, zany and harebrained.
