Your $30 Saturday: Boerum Hill
Sat Mar 26 2011
Send your wallet for some yoga classes, because Your $30 Saturday is going to stretch it further than you ever imagined possible. Kick off the day with some booze-inspired art: MF Gallery asked 40 artists to each transform a 40-ounce beer bottle, and the results are on display in "40 Oz Show" (free). Viewing is usually by appointment, but this Saturday the gallery will be open to walk-in visitors from 2 to 6pm.
Checking out all of those brewski objets d'art might tempt you to abandon the rest of your Saturday in favor of day drinking, but try to show some restraint and grab lunch at dumpling mecca Eton instead. Sate your hunger with a dumpling sampler plate ($7) comprising three pork and beef pot stickers with cabbage, three lentil and vegetable, and three chicken and mushroom. Quench your thirst with bubble-tea flavors like honeydew, mango and black tea with almond ($3.50 each).
Once you've eaten your fill, catch a movie at Cobble Hill Cinemas ($10). We suggest Jane Eyre, the latest film adaptation of Charlotte Bront's classic novel, which earned four stars from TONY film critic Keith Uhlich. You'll need something cheery after that gothic romance, so top off the day with a trip to the Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain. This revamped 1920s pharmacy serves up old-fashioned soda shop faves infused with seasonal, local ingredients. Pull yourself up to the counter for an ice-cold egg cream made with Fox's U-bet chocolate syrup ($2.50), and Your $30 Saturday is complete.
