Washington Square Park

Start your Saturday with major savings at the James Beard Foundation's cookbook sale (10am--1pm). Peruse more than a thousand new and used tomes priced $1--$20 each. Next, walk around the corner to Murray's Bagels (500 Sixth Ave between 12th and 13th Sts; 212-462-2830, murraysbagels.com) for a bagel with flavored cream cheese ($4.50). There are 15 varieties and seven spreads to choose from—we dare your sweet tooth to tackle cinnamon-raisin topped with maple-raisin-walnut cream cheese.

Now head south to Washington Square Park, where there is always plenty to see: musicians, street artists, chess players and cute mutts in the dog run. When you've spent enough time appreciating the spring blossoms on the trees, visit the Skirball Center for Performing Arts, just south of the park. At 2pm you can catch a performance of Barrio Grrrl! ($25), a musical about a nine-year-old who imagines she is a superhero.
