Some of the year's most exciting restaurants were also some of the most surprising. A humble deli was a front for ambitious dinnertime fare at Torrisi Italian Specialties. At Osteria Morini, an haute chef took his upmarket instincts down a notch. And M. Wells in Queens earned the underdog borough its first-ever Best New Restaurant nod. But one twist seduced you more than the rest: a transcendent eatery hidden inside a furniture store. Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Dan Kluger's winning mix of healthy and decadent cuisine showcases sumptuous vegetables no carnivore could resist (a beautiful salad of roasted carrots and yogurt), and meat that would knock a vegetarian off the wagon (bowtie pasta with veal meatballs). It's a testament to the pair's prowess that they could take on a concept that wins hearts in humble Brooklyn taverns—simple seasonal food that's as easy on the environment as it is on the palate—and make it white-hot.
