Oyster pan roast at The John Dory
You're in Chelsea, and it's...
Midnight: The John Dory
April Bloomfield and Ken Friedman's newly revamped seafood spot beckons night crawlers from the Ace Hotel's always-packed lobby bar. The pristine eats are the perfect kind of drunk food: satisfying enough to relieve booze-fueled hunger pangs, but light enough that you won't regret the binge come morning. Feast on raw-bar delights like platters of oysters and gumdrop-size, candy-sweet Nantucket bay scallops ($14) or devour more substantial fare like the hyper-rich oyster pan roast with uni-slathered crostini ($15). Ace Hotel, 1196 Broadway at 29th St (212-792-9000). Kitchen open until 2am.
2am: Artichoke Basille's
Come the witching hour, the third location of this celebrated slice shop is colonized by Chelsea club kids. It's four times the size of the East Village original, which means plenty of seating for large, rambunctious groups. In addition to the signature creamy spinach-artichoke pizza, there are expanded options like a salty-crunchy "burnt anchovy" pie and giant bowls of hearty pasta fagioli. Be warned: There's a strong popped-collar quotient at this hour. 114 Tenth Ave at 17th St (212-792-9200). Kitchen open until 5am.
5am: Donut Pub
The decor hasn't changed much since the 1964 opening of this 14th Street hole-in-the-wall. Claim a swivel stool at the counter and select your pastry of choice from the trays of handmade, old-fashioned doughnuts lining one wall: Expertly twisted French crullers, puffy Boston kremes and finger-staining sugar jellies ($1--$2) are all staples. Gussied-up MePa partyers file in to sate their late-night sweet tooth, but there's a solid old--New York clientele, too: Ex-beatnik regulars are a refreshing fixture, as is the occasional crazy—on a recent visit, a woman flashed her breasts and demanded free coffee. 203 W 14th St between Seventh and Eighth Aves (212-929-0126). Kitchen open 24hrs.
