Midtowners griping about the lack of good lunch spots in their neighborhood should appreciate this small, tranquil spot inside the WJ Hotel. The menu features all kinds of Japanese favorites, like vegetable tempura and stuffed savory pancakes. Stick to sushi and you won’t encounter any misses: A mammoth “spider roll” with fried soft-shell crab and fish roe was nicely spiced with a crunchy texture, and the una avo—a barbecued eel–avocado combo—was bursting with flavor. Order the simply named homemade pudding for dessert, a rich, creamy treat hiding an oozing layer of caramel underneath.
