The following venues are expected to open by February 22. Always call ahead, as openings can be delayed.
San Matteo Panuozzo New York sandwich buffs might have Reubens, banh mi and panini down pat, but here's another worthy addition to the rotation: panuozzo, a specialty of Salerno. At uptown pizzeria San Matteo, the Italian sammies proved so popular, owners Enzo Scardino and Fabio and Ciro Casella decided to spotlight them at this 12-seat East Village spin-off, expected to open by February 22. The bread, made with pizza dough, is what sets the panuozzo apart. Here, the flat, chewy loaves come from the flagship Upper East Side restaurant, where they are baked for 25 seconds in a 900-degree wood-fired oven to achieve a moist crumb. Choose from 11 sandwiches, like dry-cured pancetta with provolone and artichokes, honey turkey with smoked buffalo mozzarella and sun-dried Sicilian peppers, and burrata cheese with arugula, roasted peppers and truffle oil. The shop also serves homemade gelato, San Pellegrino sodas and espresso made with beans from Salerno coffee roaster Caffe Vittoria. 121 St. Marks Pl between First Ave and Ave A (212-979-8000)
5 Napkin Burger The upscale burger chainlet opens its fourth New York location, a 125-seat spot in the East Village, on February 20. Offbeat offerings like sushi, fish tacos and French onion soup bolster the menu, which also includes the signature ten-ounce patty topped with caramelized onions, Gruyre cheese and rosemary aioli. 150 E 14th St at Third Ave (212-228-5500)
Jaguars 3 Sin City refugee Vincent Faraci puts a Vegas spin on Brooklyn's urban jungle at this tropically themed restaurant and nightclub, which is expected to open on February 22. Tiger and monkey statues, leopard-print chests and an indoor waterfall adorn the 60-seat Sunset Park venue. Diners can dig into pricey Italian plates, like pan-seared foie gras on grilled ciabatta with Amarena cherry marmalade; risotto with scampi, champagne and strawberries; and pappardelle al tartufo, with fresh porcini and shaved black truffle. At 10pm, resident disc jockey DJ Skribble, seen on MTV, hits the decks, spinning hip-hop in the bamboo-and-palm-tree-decorated space. 225 47th St between Second and Third Aves, Sunset Park, Brooklyn (347-457-6544)
Juice Generation Get your green-smoothie boost at this juice chain, opening on February 22. Health-food exotica—aai, bee pollen and hemp protein—along with fresh veggies and fruits make up the blended offerings. For heartier nourishment, pick up a sandwich (tuna with apples and cranberries on multigrain bread), soup (vegetarian bean chili) or baked goodie (vegan pear-granola muffin). 1486 Third Ave between 83rd and 84th Sts (212-249-4071)
Wahoo's Fish Taco This debut outpost of the Cali Mexican chain, founded by three surfers in 1988, showcases Brooklyn's Bustin longboards, graffiti murals and mountain bikes on the walls. Hawaiian flavors mix in with South of the Border plates, including veggie tacos and burritos made with teriyaki sauce, or the carnitas-filled Kalua Pig Bowl. To drink, find boozy tropical classics, such as margaritas, mojitos and mai tais. This venue will open on February 20. 333 Park Ave South between 24th and 25th Sts (212-466-3330)
