Good morning, New York! While many are still reeling from Hurricane Sandy, Con Edison restored power to parts of lower Manhattan last night; the 4, 5, 6 subway lines are running at full service; and the sun is shining on Gotham once again. Take advantage of the good weather—get out there and help your fellow New Yorkers. Some restaurants and bars were able to reopen in the past few days, but the recovery is just starting up.
Here are three things you can do to support the New York City food industry right now:
1. Patronize downtown restaurants and bars: As of this morning, Everyman Espresso is pulling shots at their 13th street location, Momofuku Ssam Bar is gearing up for lunch service and the Dutch is open for brunch. Many more downtown spots—who have taken big financial hits over the past week—are opening doors and welcoming in customers. Remember to tip big and be patient as newly reopened spaces work out the kinks.
2. Volunteer in Red Hook: Beloved Brooklyn spots—like Mile End's commissary and Baked—experienced significant damage from the freak weather storm and they're still cleaning up. This morning, St. John Frizzell of Fort Defiance put out this Facebook message: "Good morning! Just heading down to start the work day. Please come help if you can—if we can't use you, someone else can. Could really use some people with light carpentry skills and tools today—have to cut away some of our paneling." Put on some work clothing and bike or cab it out to Red Hook to spend the day helping the community rebuild.
3. Support local farmers: Many farms also lost revenue while the markets were shut down. If you're as sick of eating bodega junk food as we are, then get out there and stock your basket with fresh produce. The Union Square Greenmarket is operating temporarily in the Madison Square Park at Broadway and 23rd St.
