Chef Edwin Bellanco (Morrell Wine Bar & Cafe, Bouley) executes a European-American menu at this 110-seat restaurant. Perch on a cushy white-leather seat at the alder-wood bar and choose from more than 120 wines. In the main dining room and overlooking mezzanine, find pastas (wild-mushroom pappardelle), mains (rib eye, cocoa-crusted venison loin) and globe-trotting appetizers (terrines, tacos, crudo).

We stopped by Vitae last night (a Tuesday) for drinks. Unsure of what to expect at a resto that seems to draw the younger, hipper side of Midtown after-hours, we were pleasantly surprised by the cocktails: an excellently executed pisco sour, followed by Vitae's rift on the Manhattan. Most cocktails are made with house-culled (and often house-rendered) ingredients. A bit pricey (abt $14 each), but nothing out-of-ordinary for this area. The X wooden, stand-up bar tables at front allowed for good people-watching through the windows and of those who enter. Never got to sit in the bar chairs (all full!), but wish we could have. It was busy - reservations needed, even on a Tuesday. Well-conceived wine list, thanks to GM / somm Emily, with a traditional range of bottles.
