Agent Provocateur
Sex kittens know this is the go-to place for seductive stockings. Pick up a hot black latex pair for $150, or class it up like a film noir dame with a pair of Whip Me French seamed thigh-high stockings for $70. Even prudish New Yorkers can find something to love—like the Shooting Star sheer stockings with an astral design ($70) or tiger-print hold-ups ($70). 133 Mercer St between Prince and Spring Sts (212-965-0229, agentprovocateur.com)

American Apparel
Assless tights aside, this hipster chain boasts a superior selection in every shade on the color wheel (mustard, midnight blue, green apple, etc.). Styles of special note include the Luxe solid-stripe pantyhose ($26), super-sheer Spiral tights ($14), multicolor Watercolor tights ($30) and opaque two-color pantyhose ($16). Locations throughout the city; visit americanapparel.net

Anthropologie
Though prices at this chain can be steep, the tights are worth the splurge. Most of the patterns are distinctive and ornamental; we especially love the navy Dotty Downpour tights ($18), decorated with bows and polka dots; the floral-print Red Fields tights ($18); and the conservative-enough-for-work diamond-striped Surprise tights ($18). Locations throughout the city; visit anthropologie.com

Century 21
The rumors are true: This store can be a nightmare. But the discount prices on designer hosiery are well worth the tourist smackdown. Styles to snatch include Cynthia Rowley polka-dot tights for $9 (originally $15), Jessica Simpson Aztec lace-pattern tights for $7 (formerly $18) and Givenchy diamond shimmer tights for $10 (was $18). Locations throughout the city; visit c21stores.com

Fogal of Switzerland
The semi-opaque tights ($43) at this high-end hosiery shop come in 70 colors, including attention-grabbing plum and hot pink. But why stop there when you can select from a plethora of unique seasonal styles, like black-and-white Infinity knee-highs ($12) or sheer white Paradise tights with colored flowers ($49)? 515 Madison Ave at 53rd St (212-355-3254, fogal.com)

Free People
We were already big fans of FP’s flirty tops and colorful bangles, but we’re now total converts to its hip hosiery line. Gussy up your usual party attire with the brand’s rhinestone lace tights ($24), gold opaque tights ($12) or crocheted thigh-highs ($28), or dig into the adorable sock selection: Pointelle ankle socks are $10, lacey ruffled anklets are $6 a pair, and striped over-the-knee socks are just $14. Locations throughout the city; visit freepeople.com

The Sock Man
This East Village leg-wear haven has enough funky options to outfit Lady Gaga (or any of her flamboyant disciples) for years to come. Out-there picks include argyle knee-high socks ($5), skull or leopard-print tights ($20 per pair) and tie-dye tights ($12) out the wazoo. 27 St. Marks Pl between Second and Third Aves (212-529-0300, thesockman.com)

Topshop
Trendsters routinely comb this four-story shop for the latest, greatest and most disposable. Add some flair to your Saturday-night getup by raiding the patterned- and textured-tights section. Our faves include the Candy Dobby spotted tights ($16); heart-printed over-the-knee socks ($16); the half-lace, half-opaque tights ($20); and dusty-pink vintage-lace tights ($24). 478 Broadway between Broome and Grand Sts (212-966-9555, topshop.com)

Uniqlo
We’re crazy for this store’s innovative Heattech clothing line, but we also like to browse its floor-to-ceiling hosiery collection. With tights starting as low as $5 and topping out around $11, there’s no reason not to own one of everything in the stirrup collection. 546 Broadway between Prince and Spring Sts (917-237-8800, uniqlo.com)

Wolford Boutique
This elegant boutique specializes in high-quality hosiery; the prices may make you balk, but the brand is renowned for its longevity. “Ninety-nine percent of people who walk in walk away with something,” says manager Olga Mayer. “And once they buy Wolford, there’s no going back to $10 tights.” Noteworthy designs include Cachet hole-pattern tights ($58), Hot Dots diamond-patterned tights ($65), Souvenir lace tights with flowers ($150), and Dazzle fishnets ($55). Locations throughout the city; visit wolford.com
