Best new indie shops 2011
Winner: Shen Beauty
Bright studio lighting and romantic gilded mirrors help to set the clean, spalike vibe at this skincare wonderland. Co-owner Jessica Richards says she has trouble keeping Amanda Lacey cleanser ($92), a thick pomade that seals the skin against city grime, on the shelves. Other standouts include Mrs. White's cold cream ($38), an update of the classic makeup remover with apple cider vinegar, and RMS Beauty's sheer coconut-oil concealer ($36). Guys will love the retro shaving serum, also by Mrs. White's ($36), and minty two-in-one shampoo and conditioner by Ebba ($17). 15 percent off all purchases through May 1. 315 Court St between Sackett and DeGraw Sts, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn (718-576-2679, shen-beauty.com)
Runner-up: The Lipstick Box
The goods at this girly boutique, which is outfitted with glass cases and pink spotlights, are packaged and presented to charm makeup obsessives. To take advantage of the shop's namesake items, first prepare your smackers with Sara Happ lip exfoliator in almond, crme brle and peppermint ($24) and follow with the brand's lip conditioner ($24). Then choose from the countless bright, matte, neutral or shimmery lipstick shades from either Too Faced ($20) or the Balm ($17). Guys can take care of their skin with Mario Badescu aftershave moisturizer ($15) and maintain a right-out-of-the-shower smell with Shower Fresh cologne by Clean ($74). 1738 86th St between Bay 16 and 17th Sts, Bensonhurst, Brooklyn (347-497-7211, thelipstickbox.com)
