Who says cycling has to be all fun and games? Every time you hop onto one of Recycle-A-Bicycle's fleet of Dutch-government-donated three-speed Batavus bikes, all proceeds go towards funding NYC community initiatives. Beneficiaries include after-school training programs, a youth riding club and a bike mechanics elective offered in partnership with public high schools. The bright-orange rides, available at either of the nonprofit's two retail locations, come complete with a bell, lights and rear cargo rack. 75 Ave C between 5th and 6th Sts (212-475-1655). Traif Bike Gesheft
This bare-bones store, whose name roughly means "non-kosher bike shop" in Yiddish, no longer offers repairs or sales, but it does teach you how to be your own Mr. or Ms. Fix-It during free classes offered through Time's Up on a rotating schedule (times vary, visit times-up.org for details). It's also home to a 24-hour vending machine, which is situated outside the door and dispenses bike parts in case you need a late-night tire patch kit. 99 South 6th St between Bedford Ave and Berry St, Williamsburg, Brooklyn (917-720-0992).
