Breakout designer: Alex Casertano

Who he is: The 27-year-old Millbrook, New York, native began his career in the art world—he has a B.A. in fine arts from Amherst College and worked with artists Sol LeWitt and George Condo—before studying fashion design at Parsons and working in the menswear departments of J.Crew and Yigal Azroul.
Why we like him: Casertano’s menswear background gives his women’s pieces a sophisticated structure. His modern twist on classic American sportswear makes nearly every piece perfect for transitioning from the cubicle to cocktails.
About the collection: Natural materials (raw silk and linen) are combined with synthetic ones (shiny viscose jersey) to create chic separates, like a raffia motorcycle jacket over a draped white dress and a silk blouse paired with a color-block romper. Casertano kept the color palette mostly muted, with pops of red and green for a graphic effect.—Laura Lanz-Frolio
