Antique stores; Hudson, NY
Travel time: Two hours from NYC by train
This Columbia County town's main drag, Warren Street, is packed with more than 40 antique shops. Hit Hudson Supermarket (hudsonsupermarket.com) for an intriguing mix of stock including Tibetan saddle rugs and 1960s glassware, and grab lunch in its modern-Mexican caf. Elsewhere along the strip, sculptor Nancy Shaver amasses appealing items (a hand-embroidered Indian quilt, early-20th-century tools, ancient stuffed animals) at Henry (518-828-2354), while Historical Materialism (historicalmaterialism.com) covers interesting furniture dating across a broad time span. It's not all about antiques, though: Take a detour to Five and Diamond (518-828-1557) for charming vintage frocks from the 1930s to the 1970s.

Art Star Craft Bazaar; Philadelphia, PA
Travel time: Two hours from NYC by bus
Over the past eight years, the Art Star Craft Bazaar (artstarcraftbazaar.com; May 14--15 11am--6pm) has grown from a 20-vendor local affair to an event featuring 150 artists and a dozen local bands. "Each year we get more applications from other parts of the country," says Erin Waxman, who founded it with Megan Brewster. Goods reflect the offbeat aesthetic of the duo's shop, Art Star (artstarphilly.com), such as Jordan Elise Perme's Horrible Adorables (felt animal heads with glass eyes) and Miss Millie's porcelain mugs incorporating cast doll parts. Arrive early—the first 250 people receive coupon books—and leave time to explore Old City's boutiques. DailyCandy's Philadelphia editor, Susan Banchek, suggests heading to North 3rd Street between Market and Race Streets for locally made wares at Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction (215-922-2600, artintheage.com), and fashion for both genders at Sugarcube (215-238-0825, sugarcube.us). Don't forget, there's no sales tax on clothing in PA.

Brimfield Antique Show; Brimfield, MA
Travel time: Three and a half hours from NYC by car
Three times a year, up to 5,000 antiques and bric-a-brac dealers from all over the world descend on this New England town (population 3,600) for the weeklong Brimfield Antique Show, a patchwork of 20 separate shows set up in fields on both sides of Route 20. (Each independently operated site is open different days and times, and some charge $5 admission.) "There's a huge variety of objects and a lot of crazy personalities, and you can find the occasional extraordinary thing," says Robin Standefer of design team Roman and Williams, who found more than enough extraordinary things to outfit the Ace Hotel in Manhattan. About half the furniture in the Ace's lobby, plus the massive American flag hanging near the bar, were Brimfield discoveries. brimfield.com. May 10--15; July 12--17; Sept 6--11. Times and prices vary.
Make it an overnight: Artist Sherry Simonic designed all the plans and rooms for Brimfield's Yankee Cricket B&B, which she and her husband, Bill, run in a 19th-century-style house set in 19 acres of woodland. yankeecricket.com; all rooms $150.

Woodbury Common Premium Outlets; Central Valley, NY
Travel time: One hour from NYC by bus
Bargain addicts who've already sifted through the stock at Century 21 can catch the daily Hampton Luxury Liner (hamptonluxuryliner.com, $42) to Woodbury Common. The trip takes about an hour, depending on your pickup point, and makes its return journey five hours later—which means you'll need to think carefully about which of the 220 outlets you want to hit. Label snobs should make a beeline for Chlo and just-opened posh British clothier Dunhill—both of which are exclusive to Woodbury. During the Memorial Day weekend sale (May 27--30), prices are slashed even lower than the usual 25 to 65 percent off. premiumoutlets.com
