Designers' black book

We asked designers Adam Lippes, Mara Hoffman, Rebecca Taylor, Tracy Reese and Phillip Lim where they actually shop in NYC.

Mara Hoffman

Best accessories store: New York Adorned (47 Second Ave at 3rd St, 212-473-0007) “It’s a tattoo parlor--cum--accessories shop that my friend owns. She goes to India a few times a year and always brings back the most beautiful jewelry to sell.”
Best cheap store: H&M (various locations throughout the city; go to hm.com for info)“I’ll run in to H&M, for sure, but I’ve gotten out of the disposable-clothing mentality—things just fall apart. I’d rather buy one thing and hold on to it, instead of buying ten little disposable things.”
Best store for inspiration: ABC Carpet (888 Broadway between 18th and 19th Sts, 212-473-3000) “It’s overpriced and has been around forever, but I love walking around—it’s probably the India connection that I like.”
Best vintage store: No. 6 (6 Centre Market Pl between Broome and Grand Sts, 212-226-5759)“I love vintage stores—I’m constantly on the hunt. My husband just had to build me a new closet because my stuff was everywhere. I love No. 6 because they have a great mix of vintage pieces and cool new designers.”

Rebecca Taylor

Best cheap store: Ikea (1 Beard St at Otsego St, Red Hook, Brooklyn; 718-422-1226)“Ikea is always filled with promise! You can change your whole life for $100!”
Favorite clothing boutique: Bird (various locations throughout the city; go to shopbird.com for info)“Bird in Park Slope carries a lot of my favorite brands and it’s down the road from my house, so I don’t need to go into Manhattan to get a fashion fix.”
Best accessories store: Marc by Marc Jacobs (385 Bleecker St at Perry St, 212-924-6126)“I love all the cute bits and pieces you can pick up at Marc by Marc on Bleecker Street. My neon-pink fingerless gloves are great.”

Tracy Reese

Best cheap store: Club Monaco (various locations throughout the city; go to clubmonaco.com for info)“I’ve found some great necklaces here at affordable prices.”
Best store for jeans: Anthropologie (various locations throughout the city; go to anthropologie.com for info)“The most recent thing I bought was a pair of Joe’s Jeans at Anthropologie. They always have my size!”

Phillip Lim

Best men’s shop: Atelier (304 Hudson St at Spring St; 212-941-8435, ateliernewyork.com)
Best antiques: Mantiques (146 W 22nd St between Sixth and Seventh Aves; 212-206-1494, mantiquesmodern.com)
Best home store: BDDW (5 Crosby St between Grand and Howard Sts; 212-625-1230, bddw.com)“I love, love, love BDDW! They sell art forms that you can use—instead of just stare at! Plus, the creator, Taylor Hayes, is a genius.”
Best vintage store: Exquisite Costume (377 Broome St between Mott and Mulberry Sts; 212-966-4142, exquisitecostume.com)
Best gifts store: Herms “It’s a one-stop shop—something for everyone. Who doesn’t like a li’l Herms in his life?”

Matthew Williamson

Best store for deals: H&M (various locations throughout the city; go to hm.com for info)“H&M, with whom I have recently collaborated, is great for basics and fashion-forward pieces. I admire their ethos of democracy within fashion and how they allow their customers to incorporate trends into their wardrobe without breaking the bank.”
Best vintage store: New York Vintage (482 Broome St at Wooster St, 212-226-9463)“New York Vintage is small, but there’s a huge amount of vintage clothing packed into its two floors. Upstairs is a treasure trove of couture dresses, shoes, bags and jewelry from the 1920s and 1930s. They rent and sell the garments and have an area downstairs especially for fittings.”
Best accessories store: Fragments (116 Prince St between Greene and Wooster Sts, 212-334-9588)“Fragments has a really wonderful selection of contemporary and fine jewels. Bergdorf Goodman also has a sizable offering of gold and vintage designer jewelry, which is a chic and fashionable staple.”
Best under-the-radar store: TG-170 (170 Ludlow St between Houston and Stanton Sts, 212-995-8660)“TG-170 on the Lower East Side has a great selection and supports local designers and up-and-coming independent brands.”
Best store for inspiration: De Vera (1 Crosby St between Grand and Howard Sts, 212-625-0838)“I always go to the New York branch of De Vera for fresh inspiration. It is owned by an art dealer and, in his own words, only contains 'objects of inherent beauty.’ There is a bizarre and interesting mixture of fine art, sculpture and jewelry, all carefully collected by the owner.”
On recent street trends: “People seem to be gearing up for summer and introducing the on-trend neon brights into their wardrobe through accessories.”
