It's cool to donate your old duds and furniture to Housing Works, so the shelter-oriented charity's thrift stores are among the city's best. The prices aren't the lowest, but the stock is quality. If you're lucky, you can score designer pieces (in clothes and furnishings) you'd never be able to afford new. You just have to do a little rummaging.

I recently went to this Housing Works thrift shop location because it was holding a designer sample sale. I went and bought some unexpectedly great things, including Sam Edelman loafers for $45, a purchase I was only further excited about knowing the proceeds were going to a good cause. There were offerings from tons of designers, and clothes ranged from casual to formal. Since everyone on "staff" there was a volunteer, there were lots of friendly people willing to help wandering around. There was also a section for accessories, house things and books. I'll definitely be taking advantage of the next Housing Works shopping event.
