Audrey Lea Curry, 24; makeup artist, fashion designer, fine artist, stylist and model (audreyleacurry.com); Bushwick, Brooklyn
Her personal style: “My personal style is gothic vamp meets glamorous and classy meshed together. I like to wear lots of layers and lots of black. I have so much fun accessorizing—not only with clothing, but also makeup.“
Her inspirations: “My style is inspired by anything and everything: art, gothic architecture, dark vampire movies and theatrical clothing, Renaissance-period [garb], some clothing from the bustle period. I am also very inspired by people in the world on a daily basis.”
Favorite stores: “Re/Dress NYC (109 Boerum Pl between Dean and Pacific Sts, Brooklyn Heights; 718-522-7962, redressnyc.com) is my favorite store in the whole world. It’s a plus-size vintage resale boutique for sizes 14-plus, and the staff really cares about how you look and feel in the clothing you are finding. Urban Jungle (118 Knickerbocker St between Flushing Ave and Thames St, Bushwick, Brooklyn; urbanjunglevintage.wordpress.com) has so many great [vintage] accessories for affordable prices. Nordstrom Rack (60 E 14th St at Fourth Ave; 212-220-2080, nordstrom.com) sells size 14 shoes for women, and there’s usually a fair amount to choose from.”
Her signature accessory: “Red lipstick is definitely the closest thing to it.”
Favorite designers: “I appreciate all designers and everyone’s art, but come on, local designers! Crank out some plus-size looks and see if you will become my favorite!”
How her style has evolved through the years: “I was a tomboy growing up in the Midwest—always playing sports and going to a Catholic school—so I felt clothing was unnecessary and silly. I started to find my love of fashion in high school, but my style was nothing like it is today. I think this aesthetic developed during the past few years of living in New York, and having the resources to find clothing I want in my size.”
