New York designer spotlight: Locally designed shorts

Who she is: It’s no surprise that designer Shelly LeSun has made a warm-weather staple the focus of her eponymous women’s clothing line, having grown up in sunny Florida and studied fashion at Miami International University of Art and Design. “Whether you’re living in Miami or in the Northeast during the summer, shorts are always a classic in any woman’s wardrobe,” she explains. After interning for Wes Gordon and Zac Posen, LeSun launched her patterned-shorts collection in March 2012. She now commutes between her Williamsburg apartment and a work studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, where she hand-makes most pairs.

About the line: LeSun aims to create shorts ($90–$140) that appeal universally to women, sourcing a diverse array of cotton twill, denim and silk fabrics from the Garment District. “I really believe in nicely tailored clothing that wouldn’t be too avant-garde for people to wear,” she says. LeSun is drawn to bold prints such as tiger stripes, polka dots and tie-dye, but tones them down with a single clean, classic cut. “[They] are accent pieces,” she notes. “Women can express their own style and personality through the prints.” Looking ahead, she’s raising money on Kickstarter to fund production on a range of cropped trousers, and also hopes to add tops to the mix.
